Web Programmer/Maintainer

For ease of maintenance, your group may wish to designate a Web Programmer/ Maintainer. This task is not nearly as daunting as it sounds.

It is not necessary for your office to understand the programming languages used to build Web sites, and in fact, most clients we work with do not. IWSS programmers can build any necessary features such as forms or databases. Also, we offer to train each of our clients to update their site using Dreamweaver, a software program you can purchase through Software Management.

Your Web Programmer/Maintainer will primarily be responsible for updating broken links and adding or removing pages from your Web site and navigation. If there is someone in your group who has an interest in computers and the Web, he or she may be perfect for this role. However, if no one stands out to you, don't worry. We can train your group on the basics of Web maintenance throughout the course of the project.

Planning Phase:

Before making changes, you must choose what software you will be using to edit your site. IWSS uses Contribute and Dreamweaver, and provides Contribute and Dreamweaver training to our clients in our office. However, feel free to use the editing tool you are most comfortable with. Please read our Nuts and Bolts (see below) package to understand how to set up your Web-editing software and how to make basic changes to your site.

Development Phase:

IWSS follows the procedures listed below to make your site easier to maintain. Please take a moment to famialiarize yourself with these procedures so you will understand how to effectively maintain your site:

Web Programmers/Maintainers should understand the navigational structure of the site during paper storyboard (pdf) and eStoryboard development and once the Storyboard is complete so they can make updates quickly and easily, and add new pages to the proper location.

Maintenance Phase:

Once the initial project is complete, the Web Programmer/Maintainer is responsible for maintaining the functionality of the Web site. Be sure you understand the University Web Accessibility Requirements (pdf) and make sure your site remains accessible.
